Consumer price guide
What determines furniture and home décor prices
Furniture is hard to estimate from a photograph because much of its quality is internal. A sofa hides its frame and foam; a desk hides its lifting mechanism; a mattress combines layers that look similar from outside. Dimensions matter, but material and construction usually explain the largest differences.

Identify the structure beneath the surface
For seating, frame joints, suspension and foam density influence comfort and lifespan. For storage furniture, panel thickness, backing and shelf span affect stability. A decorative finish can look convincing online while the underlying construction remains light-duty.
Mechanisms add cost. Recliners, extendable tables and standing desks need moving parts that remain stable under load. When a product adjusts, folds or lifts, consider the hardware as a major component rather than a free extra.
Read material descriptions carefully
Solid wood, veneer, laminated board and metal each behave differently and should not be priced as interchangeable labels. Textiles vary by fibre, weave, abrasion resistance and stain treatment. In rugs and curtains, density, lining and finishing can matter more than pattern.
A material name alone is incomplete. Thickness, grade and how the material is assembled determine whether it improves the product. Premium materials used sparingly do not necessarily make the whole object premium.
Include size, delivery and assembly
Large furniture occupies warehouse and transport space, so logistics can influence the final price. Flat-packed products reduce those costs but transfer assembly work to the buyer. Bulky delivery, room-of-choice service and removal of packaging may be priced separately.
Compare exact dimensions rather than category names. A compact two-seat sofa, a deep three-seat model and a modular sectional solve different problems. Mattress thickness and bed size likewise change the amount of material and the delivery challenge.
Estimate value through expected use
An occasional chair and a daily office chair need different durability. Start with the intended frequency of use, then judge adjustability, cleanability and replaceable parts. A higher initial price can be reasonable when the product must handle many hours of use, but appearance alone is weak evidence.
In a guessing round, establish a basic mass-market reference and adjust for scale, mechanism, upholstery and delivery. Avoid anchoring on a temporary sale because furniture categories frequently use promotional list prices. For housing references, location and usable floor area replace construction details as the starting point.

Furniture
Three-Seat Sofa
Fabric sofa from a mainstream furniture retailer
A sofa price often hides frame material, foam density and fabric durability, details that are difficult to judge from the outside.
Furniture
Ergonomic Office Chair
Adjustable mesh chair for home office
Office chairs can look similar, but tilt mechanisms, lumbar support and warranty length explain why ergonomic models cost much more.
Real Estate
Central Apartment
Price per square metre in the city centre
In city-centre real estate, location can dominate the price so strongly that two similar rooms can differ wildly a few streets apart.
Furniture
Standing Desk
Electric height-adjustable desk
Standing desks depend on motor stability and frame weight capacity; wobble at full height is a hidden quality test.
Furniture
Bookshelf
Five-tier home bookshelf
Bookshelves often price material thickness and load capacity; a shelf that sags under books quickly loses value.
Furniture
Queen Mattress
Memory foam mattress in a box
Mattresses are one of the most promotion-heavy categories, so list price and typical selling tiers can be very different.
Home Decor
Floor Lamp
LED floor lamp for living room
Lamp pricing often reflects design, finish, switch quality and included LED technology more than the basic electrical circuit.
Home Decor
Area Rug
Medium woven living-room rug
Rugs vary by fibre, weave density and backing; two rugs of the same size can feel completely different underfoot.
Home Decor
Blackout Curtains
Pair of thermal blackout curtains
Blackout curtains are priced by fabric weight, lining and thermal performance, not just their dimensions.
